The dome of St Paul’s Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was completed in 1710 after the medieval cathedral was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
For over 250 years St Paul’s dome dominated the London skyline — the city long limited building heights to protect views of it.
Victorian London was the largest city in the world at the time, its streets crowded with horse-drawn carriages, market traders and gas lamps.
