“Tornado Alley” is a stretch of the central United States — through Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska — where warm, moist Gulf air collides with cool, dry air to spawn violent storms.

Most tornadoes are born from rotating thunderstorms called supercells, which can tower more than 15 km (50,000 ft) into the sky.

Tornadoes are ranked from EF0 to EF5 on the Enhanced Fujita scale, based on the damage their winds leave behind — an EF5 can level a well-built house.
